Early Signals. Safer Outcomes.

A simple, structured system designed to support early communication and reduce psychosocial risk before issues escalate in high-risk work environments.

Designed for mining, construction, and other high-risk industries, Green Thumb integrates into existing systems without disruption.

What Is Green Thumb

Overview

Green Thumb is a simple, visible system designed to identify early signs of psychosocial risk in high-risk work environments.

It enables individuals to signal when support is needed before issues escalate into safety, behavioural, or performance-related risks.

The system operates within existing Work Health and Safety (WHS) frameworks and supports early intervention without adding complexity to current processes.

How It Works

The Green Thumb System

Green Thumb provides a structured way for individuals to communicate early.

A visible marker indicates the need for a check-in, while the individual remains engaged and accountable in their role. Teams are then able to respond within clearly defined expectations.

This creates a consistent approach to communication and reduces the need for reactive responses after issues have already escalated.

Key Principles

  • Early identification of risk
  • No removal from responsibility
  • Structured response within existing systems
  • Clear, visible communication
  • Consistent application across teams

Workplace Safety

Fatigue & Shift Application

Fatigue indicator illustration

Green Thumb can also be used as an early fatigue indicator, particularly during mid to late shift periods when extended work hours begin to affect performance.

Simple, accessible markers are available on site, enabling workers to signal when they need support. This allows teams to respond early and helps maintain safe, consistent, and high-performing operations.

Low-Stigma Communication

Green Thumb offers a low-stigma way for individuals to communicate a simple message:

“I’m still good to work — I could just use a bit of extra support.”

This signal does not remove responsibility. Instead, it creates early awareness and allows for a structured response.

On-Site Application

Markers may be made available in crib rooms, tool stores, or other designated areas on site. They are applied by the individual when additional support is needed, while full engagement with tasks and responsibilities is maintained.

The signal alerts team members or supervisors to check in and enables an early response without disrupting operations.

Structured Response

When a Green Thumb signal is identified, a short check-in is completed. Tasks may be adjusted where required, and additional supervision or support can be applied. Work continues within safe and controlled conditions.

Outcome

Green Thumb supports:

  • Early fatigue identification
  • Maintained performance across shifts
  • Reduced escalation of risk
  • Stronger team communication
  • Consistent, safe operations

Why It Matters

Not All Risks Are Visible.

In high-risk environments, many issues are only addressed once they’ve already become visible.

Fatigue can impact performance.

Disengagement can reduce awareness.

Behavioural changes can increase workplace risk.

Green Thumb supports earlier identification and response — helping reduce escalation and improve consistency across teams.

Industry Alignment

Built For High-Risk Environments.

Green Thumb aligns with existing WHS frameworks and site systems. It does not replace current processes — it strengthens them.

Supports psychosocial risk management

Reinforces safety culture

Integrates into daily operations

Requires no major structural change

Partner With Green Thumb

Partnership & Sponsorship

Designed for industry adoption.

Green Thumb is seeking partners across mining, construction, transport, and industrial operations.

Partnership opportunities may include pilot implementation, workforce rollout, training and communication development, and strategic sponsorship.

Why Partner

  • An early intervention tool for workforce risk
  • Improved communication across teams
  • Stronger safety culture
  • Alignment with psychosocial hazard obligations
  • Low-risk implementation

Developed Through AMHTO

Built On A Structured Model.

Green Thumb is an independently adoptable system developed as part of the AMHTO model.

AMHTO applies structured, upstream approaches to workforce development and psychosocial risk. Green Thumb represents the early-stage engagement component of that model.
